Taipei [Taiwan], May 18: Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss arrived in Taiwan on May 16, starting a five-day visit to the territory, according to Taiwan's CNA news agency.
Ms. Truss is the highest-ranking British politician to visit the island since Margaret Thatcher 's 1996 trip (1925-2013), who served as British Prime Minister from 1979-1990.
Speaking in Taipei on May 17, Ms. Truss criticized many Western countries choosing to concede to China because they do not want another Cold War . "The only choice we have is: Do we compromise and follow that strategy or do we act now to prevent conflict," the former leader was quoted as saying by Reuters. She also called for the creation of an "economic NATO" to deal with China.
Beijing has criticized Ms. Truss ' visit . According to the Chinese Embassy in London, the trip is a "dangerous political drama that will bring nothing but harm to Britain".
