Havana [Cuba], August 4: Cuba has begun gradually restoring power after another nationwide blackout, the sixth this year, as the island struggles to keep its ageing electricity grid running.
The power went out across the island late Sunday and then slowly returned on Monday, but much of Cuba remains disconnected. Two units at the Energas gas-fired plant at Boca de Jaruco, east of Havana, were being reconnected to the grid on Monday, said state utility Union Electrica de Cuba. The Communist-run country has been hampered by fuel shortages and outdated infrastructure, compounded by the effects of United States sanctions.
